A Wi‑Fi (or timer) plug that sits between the wall and a device cluster. Schedule “off” overnight and soft-off consoles, docks, and charger bricks stop sipping watts while you sleep.
How it works
Many devices never truly power down. They wait for remotes, network packets, or a glowing LED. A smart plug cuts the circuit entirely on a schedule or with a phone tap — the same idea as flipping a switched strip, with automation.
Models vary: some add USB ports, energy monitoring, or voice assistants. For Enrev purposes the killer feature is reliable scheduling, not a dashboard of vanity charts.
A setup that sticks
- Put the TV / console / soundbar cluster on one plug or strip-fed plug.
- Schedule weeknights off (example: 23:00–07:00).
- Leave the router on a live outlet if you need overnight Wi‑Fi.
- Label the plug so guests know why the TV “won’t turn on” at midnight.
- Test once that the schedule survives a power blip or app update.
Smart plug vs switched strip
A mechanical switched strip needs a human finger — perfect if you are home and consistent. A smart plug wins when you forget, travel, or want the desk to die after you leave for work. Many homes use both.
Safety notes
Respect the amp rating. Don’t hard-cut medical devices, network gear you rely on for security cameras that must stay up, or anything that loses critical state when power drops. When in doubt, leave it live and cut only the entertainment nest.
Set-and-forget beats hunting chargers every night.
Practical tips
- Measure the cluster once with a plug meter so you know what overnight “off” is worth.
- If Wi‑Fi plugs annoy you, a $10 mechanical timer strip is enough.
- Avoid cheap no-name plugs with poor certifications — fire safety matters more than saving $3.
