Lighting is one of the rare home upgrades that pays back in months, not years — if you swap the bulbs you actually use for hours a day. Randomly replacing every bulb in a drawer full of odd shapes is how people waste money and quit.

Here’s how to prioritize rooms, read the package, and avoid the harsh “office white” mistake.

Where LEDs pay first

Start with fixtures that burn 2+ hours daily: kitchen, living room, porch, home office. Closets and rarely used baths can wait. Track rough hours for a week if you’re unsure.

• Match base type (E26, GU10, etc.) before chasing lumens.
• Choose lumens for brightness, not legacy watt “equivalents” alone.
• 2700–3000K for cozy living spaces; 3000–4000K for task kitchens.

Dimmers and buzz

Not every LED likes every dimmer. If bulbs flicker or buzz, you need dimmable LEDs plus a compatible dimmer — or stop dimming that circuit. Cheap multipacks often skip true dimming support.

Color and CRI

Low-CRI bulbs make food and skin look flat. Look for CRI 80+ (90+ is nicer for bathrooms and makeup). Avoid mixing 2700K and 5000K in the same sightline — it feels unsettled.

Disposal and heat

LEDs run cooler than halogen but fixtures still need airflow. Recycle CFLs properly if you’re replacing those — they contain mercury. Keep a small kit of spare LEDs in common bases so one failure doesn’t send you to the store at night.
