Smart plugs shine when they kill standby stacks on a schedule or let you turn off a forgotten iron from your phone. They disappoint when you expect them to magically audit your whole bill without habits.

Best uses

TV/entertainment auto-off at night, box fans on timers, and holiday lights. Energy monitoring helps you find surprise loads — if the app’s numbers are trustworthy enough for trends.

• Keep critical medical devices on dumb always-on power.
• Use schedules you will actually keep; unused automation is clutter.

Gotchas

Wi-Fi outages, app account churn, and plugs that fail “on” or “off.” Prefer reputable brands and label the breaker for anything you automate.

Automation helps habits — it doesn’t replace them.

Start with one plug on your worst standby cluster. Measure a week. Expand only if you use the schedule.
