Standard A-shape LED bulbs for everyday fixtures. Swap the rooms you leave on longest first — kitchen, desk, living room — and payback usually lands in months, not years.
How it works
Incandescent and tired halogen bulbs turn most of their electricity into heat. LEDs turn far more of it into light. They also last longer, so you climb the ladder less often and buy fewer replacements over a decade.
How to choose (without marketing fog)
- Pick lumens for brightness — ignore nostalgia for “60W equivalent” alone.
- Warm white around 2700K feels natural in living spaces; cooler temps suit task areas if you prefer.
- If you use dimmers, the package must say dimmable — and the dimmer may need LED-rated hardware.
- Match the base (E26/E27 common in many homes) and shape to the fixture shade.
Swap order that pays back fastest
Hours of use beat bulb count. A closet light that runs two minutes a day can wait. The kitchen pendant that runs every evening cannot. Map the house once, then replace high-hour sockets in a single afternoon.
What we saw on the meter
Whole-apartment before/after metering in our LED swap article showed dramatic watt reductions for the same usable brightness. Pairing LEDs with standby cuts (smart plugs / strips) stacks savings without a “smart home” renovation.
The bulbs you use most are the ones worth swapping first.
Practical tips
- Keep a small labeled spare box by base type so replacements take two minutes.
- Recycle CFLs properly where local rules require it.
- If a bulb flickers on an old dimmer, the dimmer — not the LED brand alone — is often the culprit.
