Plug-in power meter
See which devices waste watts
How it worksChargers, game consoles, cable boxes, and “off” TVs still draw power. Individually the watts look tiny; across a whole apartment they show up as a steady slice of your electric bill — often $8–20 a month you never notice.
We measured a typical living-room stack with a plug-in meter. Here’s how to cut phantom load without unplugging your life every night.
What actually draws standby power
Anything with a clock, remote receiver, or wall-wart transformer is a suspect. Cable/satellite boxes and game consoles in “instant on” mode are frequent offenders. Phone chargers draw almost nothing when empty — but powered hubs and smart speakers add up.
- Measure once with a $15–25 kill-a-watt style meter if you can.
- Note devices warm to the touch while “off.”
- List entertainment, office, and kitchen counter clusters separately.
Smart strips and switched outlets
A switched power strip lets you kill a whole desk or TV stack with one click. Advanced “smart” strips cut peripheral power when a TV or PC turns off. Put lamps and critical devices on always-on outlets if needed.
Console and TV settings
Disable “instant on” / network standby on consoles and TVs if you don’t need updates overnight. Fully power down when you’re done for the night. Streaming sticks usually sip less than a full cable box — worth comparing if you rent hardware.
Kitchen and laundry
Coffee makers with clocks, microwaves, and dishwashers with displays draw continuous power. You don’t need to unplug the fridge — focus on counters you can switch. For rarely used appliances (waffle maker, dehydrator), unplug between uses.
- One strip for the monitor/speakers/charger cluster.
- Unplug seasonal decor lights at the strip, not bulb by bulb.
- Check “eco” or “power saving” modes in device menus.
If it’s warm while off, it’s on your bill.
Spend one evening with a strip and a notepad. Kill the worst cluster tonight — the living-room stack is usually the win.
Revisit after a month’s bill. Phantom load cuts are quiet; the statement is how you know it worked.
