Herb jar + paper towel setup
Greens that last days longer

Not an aisle trophy gadget — a jar of water and a towel that keep herbs and greens from turning to slime. Featured across fridge and kitchen hacks because the habit beats fancy containers.
How it works
Trim stems, stand herbs in a jar with an inch of water like a bouquet, loosely tent with a bag. Change water when it clouds. For washed greens: dry well, layer with a paper towel in a container that isn’t sealed soaking wet.
Why produce dies early
Moisture + ethylene + the warm fridge door zone is a spoilage machine. Separating fruit that emits ethylene from delicate leaves, and giving herbs a water source, stretches freshness without a gadget subscription.
- Keep apples/bananas away from spinach and herbs.
- Put “eat first” produce at eye level.
- Don’t wash berries until you are close to eating them.
- Combine with silicone lids and clear containers for leftovers.
Highest return is often a habit, not hardware.
Practical tips
- Any clean jar works — jam jars are free recycling.
- If leaves slime anyway, your fridge crisper humidity or wash timing needs a tweak — see fridge-order.
