Store greens so they stay fresh for two weeks

Store greens so they stay fresh for two weeks

Greens turning to slime is one of the most expensive “small” wastes in a household budget. Most of the fix is moisture control and ethylene awareness — not buying fancy containers on day one.

This preview gets you the core rules. Club adds produce-by-produce charts and prep-day workflows.

Dry and airflow

Wash berries and delicate greens only before eating when you can. Excess water in a sealed bag is a mold farm. Line containers with a dry towel, swap if it gets damp, and don’t pack leaves tight enough to bruise.

  • Separate ethylene producers (apples, avocados) from ethylene-sensitive greens.
  • Store herbs like soft bouquets or wrapped in a barely damp towel.
  • Keep mushrooms in paper, not sealed plastic sweatboxes.

Leftovers that get eaten

Clear containers and visible shelves beat opaque stacks. Portion into lunch sizes the night you cook so future-you doesn’t ignore a giant vat.

Freezer as overflow

Bread, extra herbs in oil or butter, and portioned soups belong in the freezer before they become fridge science. Label with dates — anonymous foil bricks get ignored.

A jar and a paper towel beat another bag of slime in the crisper.

Club members get the two-week greens protocol, fridge photo examples, and a shopping list that matches real storage — not aspirational glass sets. Subscribe to unlock the full guide.

The jar method, step by step

Trim stems, stand herbs in a jar with an inch of water, loosely tent with a bag, and change the water when it clouds. Leafy greens get washed only when you will use them soon — or washed, spun dry, and layered with a paper towel in a container that is not sealed wet.

  • Keep ethylene producers (apples, bananas, avocados) away from delicate greens.
  • Use the crisper humidity settings if your fridge has them — high for greens, lower for fruit.
  • Label the “eat first” container so leftovers and open greens do not vanish behind juice.

The full freshness map by produce type and the two-week herb test notes are in the member version.
