Isopropyl spray bottle
Night coat that stops ice bonding

A simple spray bottle filled with a 3:1 isopropyl-to-water mix. Coat the glass at night so frost can’t grip — mornings become a wipe instead of a scrape workout that hazes the windshield.
How it works
Frost bonds when overnight moisture freezes onto cold glass. Alcohol lowers the freezing point of the thin film on the surface. You are not “melting winter.” You are preventing the crystal layer that makes scraping a fight.
The mix
- 3 parts isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher) to 1 part water.
- Optional: one drop of dish soap so the coat spreads evenly.
- Use a spray bottle that seals well — trunk temperatures vary.
- Label the bottle so nobody mistakes it for glass cleaner for indoor mirrors only.
Evening ritual
Park, spray a light even coat on the windshield and side glass, walk away. In the morning, brush once. Keep the bottle in the car so the habit doesn’t depend on remembering a kitchen cabinet.
What not to do
Never pour hot or boiling water on frozen glass — thermal shock can crack a windshield, especially with existing chips. Avoid metal scrapers and aggressive circular scrubbing. Warm the cabin with fresh-air defrost while you clear the outside.
Backup with zero chemistry
A bedsheet or cardboard tucked under the wipers still works when the bottle is empty. Prevention beats scraping either way — see the windshield-ice digest for the full comparison.
One coat the night before saves ten cold minutes — and spare glass from a season of scratches.
Practical tips
- Bump the alcohol ratio in extreme cold if the mix freezes in the bottle.
- Lift wipers slightly off the glass before a hard freeze warning so they don’t stick.
- Don’t spray onto hot lamps or into the cabin HVAC intakes.
