Plug-in “fuel saver chips” and magnetic wonder devices promise double-digit MPG gains for the price of lunch. We ran a simple before/after tank log on a common OBD “optimizer.” Spoiler: the spreadsheet was unimpressed.
Here’s how to spot the genre and what actually moves fuel economy.
What the claims ignore
Modern ECUs already manage mixture carefully. A passive doodad in the OBD port rarely rewrites physics. Testimonials without controlled tank logs are marketing.
- Ask for third-party testing, not just glowing comments.
- Be wary of “works on all cars” plus extreme percentages.
- If it requires you to “believe” and ignore your trip computer, walk away.
What to do instead
Tire pressure, smooth driving, and trip combining remain boring and effective. If MPG crashed suddenly, diagnose sensors and brakes — don’t buy a chip.
If it sounds like a cheat code for thermodynamics, it is.
Keep your money for a gauge and an air compressor. They’re not sexy. They work.
