Light parking-lot scuffs in clear coat often look worse than they are. Aggressive rubbing compound in untrained hands can burn through and make a respray inevitable — so diagnosis comes first.

The fingernail test

Wash the area first. If your nail doesn’t catch, it’s likely clear-coat level and may buff out. If it catches deeply into color or primer, you’re in touch-up or shop territory.

• Work in shade on cool paint.
• Start with the mildest polish — escalate only if needed.
• Never grind on edges and body lines.

Clean before you polish

Tar, iron fallout, and dirt act like sandpaper under a pad. Clay or a thorough wash matters more than buying the strongest compound on day one.

Touch-up reality

Paint pens help chips that expose metal — rust starts there. Match codes from the door jamb. Blending invisibly takes practice; aiming for “sealed and less obvious” is the honest DIY goal.

• Wash and dry the panel first so grit does not grind in.
• Work a tiny area with light pressure and wipe residue often.
• Stop if color transfers onto the cloth in an unexpected way.
