Renter, remote worker · Chicago, IL

The standby-power tip alone paid for a year of coffee. Now I check every charger before I sleep.

Dan’s Chicago studio doubled as an office, which meant the desk never really powered down. Dual monitors, a dock, a lamp, a speaker, three chargers, a webcam light, and a gaming console on the TV stand all hummed through the night like a tiny data center. He noticed the electricity bill creeping up after he went fully remote, but blamed winter heat and a drafty window until an Enrev digest on standby power made him uncomfortable in a useful way.

” The console’s quick-start mode alone was a permanent sip. The dock and monitors were worse than he expected. Chargers with nothing attached still drew a trickle that looked silly until he multiplied it by months.

m. m. on weeknights.

The first night he woke up convinced he had broken a firmware update; the second night he slept through it. ” He didn’t stop at strips. He disabled unused background apps on his phone after the battery article, shortened auto-lock, and started flipping the kitchen strip that fed the toaster and kettle overnight.

None of it felt like deprivation. It felt like turning off lights in rooms he wasn’t using. “I used to leave everything humming 24/7 because waking devices felt like friction,” he says.

” As a renter he can’t change the building’s HVAC or the ancient windows, but he can control the phantom load inside his four walls. He keeps the meter in a drawer and rechecks whenever he adds a new gadget, which happens more often than he admits. The habit outlasted the novelty: if it doesn’t need to be on while he sleeps, it isn’t.

When friends crash on his couch he warns them the TV strip dies at eleven. Nobody has complained twice. He also printed a one-page standby checklist and taped it inside a kitchen cabinet so weekend guests could flip the strips without asking which switch killed the Wi-Fi.
